Description
The Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences (IMCB) was established in 1993 by reorganizing the Institute of Applied Microbiology (IAM) that was founded in 1953.
As an institute affiliated with the University of Tokyo, IMCB currently has about 150 students from 6 different graduate schools in the university, i.i. Agriculture, Science, Pharmaceutical Science, Medicine, Engineering, and Frontier Sciences. Thus, IMCB functions as a center for mixing different disciplines of biological sciences. IMCB also accepts many post doctoral fellows supported either by the government or by private companies, and actively collaborates with various outside research groups.

In 1877, The University of Tokyo was founded consisting of four Faculties (Law, Science, Literature and Medicine).
The Faculty of Science consisted of eight Departments. The Koishikawa Botanical Gardens attached to the Faculty of Science.
In 2001, The Graduate School of Science consists of six departments,
Physics, Astronomy, Earth and Planetary Science,
Chemistry, Biophysics and Biochemistry, and Biological Sciences.

Description
The University of Tokyo was established in 1877 as the first national university in Japan. It offers courses in essentially all academic disciplines at both undergraduate and graduate levels and provides research facilities for these disciplines. The University aims to provide its students with opportunities for intellectual development as well as for the acquisition of professional knowledge and skills.

The University organization consists of the College of Arts and Sciences, 9 faculties, and 15 graduate schools. The 9 faculties are Law, Medicine, Engineering, Letters, Science, Agriculture, Economics, Education , and Pharmaceutical Sciences. The traditional 11 graduate schools are Law and Politics, Medicine, Engineering, Humanities and Sociology, Science, Agricultural and Life Sciences, Economics, Arts and Sciences, Education, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Mathematical Sciences.

In the past decade the University saw the establishment of 4 new pioneering graduate schools: Frontier Sciences, Interdisciplinary Information Studies, Information Science and Technology, and Public Policy.
